Media language

1) How many of the 12 magazine cover key conventions feature on this edition of Reveal? List them with specific reference to the convention on the CSP edition of Reveal.

The cover lines appeal to the the lower class strugglers who want instant gratification from controversial articles with interesting story lines.

4) What are the connotations of the Reveal colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The eye catching colours such as red , yellow blue , green suggests to the readers that this magazine is full of happy, bright interesting stories. The use of bright colours may suggest that this magazine is bursting with new hot topics and stories.

5) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression).

The outfits worn are more on the casual side and laid back and not expensive. This is super effect as it make the readers think that the celebrities represented are as normal as they are . ALSO the pictures are taken in ordinary places which reinforces how the magazine would want the readers to feel as if they are ordinary people.

6) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Reveal? List at least three and explain the effect on audiences.

Tatler uses serf to be more sophisticated to appeal to upper class women whereas Reveal uses sans serif which is more common and modern which could imply that they try to attract more middle class/lower class.
Photos-Tatler has only one image which is from a professional photo shoot but Reveal is covered in overlapping photos from the paparazzi which suggest that Tatler has access to celebrities and can afford to have professional pictures while Reveal relies on free/cheap unprofessional photos.
Cover lines-Tatler has several cover lines though as the focus is on the cover model, they aren't noticeable but on Reveal, the cover lines are large and colourful and the reader is bombarded with different stories.

Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover? How are they represented in Reveal? (Positive? Negative? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)

Beyonce appears on the front of the magazine as the only black female which is positive and negative , negative as shes the only coloured celeb on the cover but its positive because it reinforces motherhood as shes pregnant and portrays you can be beautiful and pregnant.

2) How are women represented on the cover of Reveal? Think about both images and cover lines here.

Women are represented on the reveal cover as they talk about motherhood one of the cover lines are "becomes a VERY posh mum" also they talk about skincare and sterotypically females care about self care and skincare more than men would

3) How do Reveal and Tatler represent social class? (E.g. middle/upper class and working class)

Reveal represent working class more as they focus on gossip and their target audience is mainstream whereas Tatler is more of an upperclass as they focus on fashion and beauty and their more of a niche.

4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Reveal?

The preferred reading would be that this magazine is packed with interesting stories that will bring the reader closer to the celebrity and they will gain exclusive insight into the lives of celebrities. The oppositional reading is that the paparazzi photos suggest that because the photos haven't been authorised, the information in the magazine hasn't been confirmed either, nor is it credible. Additionally, by fitting in so many stories, they will be brief and not detailed.

Social and cultural context

Media language

Revise the 12 magazine cover key conventions and check how many feature on this edition of Tatler.

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?

They used both serif and sans serif fonts

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

the typography is very bold and visible

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

the typography is pink which stereotypically links to girly girls it could link to fashion and beauty as thats what girls are into

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. Mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression)

Representations

1) What different groups of people are represented on the cover? (E.g. men/women/white people etc. Look at the image and text/cover lines to help here)

I personally think this magazine is aimed at young females as its about beauty and fashion i think it could be aimed at a younger audience as it mentions "gap year" and normally people take a gap year before uni so at around 18. I think it represents white people as the cover girl is white and also James Cordon and Georgina Bevan are also mentioned on the sides of the magazine and they both are also white.

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
The word "POSH" is written in big bold text and in sans serif and this type of text is more modern.

The people represented on the cover are white and young, the model in the central image and "millennial sloanes" and "gap year" all shows young people which is different to the target audience because the average age of the readers is 40. Also, the model is wearing bold makeup which shows the audience is more edgy, wild and modern.

3) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

The people represented on the cover are white and young, the model in the central image and "millennial sloanes" and "gap year" all shows young people which is different to the target audience because the average age of the readers is 40. Also, the model is wearing bold makeup which shows the audience is more edgy, wild and modern.

4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?

The oppositional reading would be that the magazine's readers must be quite old fashioned and have elitist attitudes. The outdated stories regarding hunting and shooting could provoke outrage and cause a lot of backlash for the magazine. The lack of "real news" (political affairs, world affairs etc...) could induce many people to disregard the magazine as shallow and not worthy of reading.
The preferred reading would be that this magazine can equip you with necessary information for any upper class woman (e.g. how to act, how to dress etc...).  The reader would be satisfied that the magazine can emulate the luxury lifestyle they are either living or aspire to live.

Social and cultural context

1) What aspects of British life or people are NOT reflected in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')

The Tatler fails to represent the political aspects of living in Britain, nor does it address government problems such as budget issues in the NHS. The Tatler does not reflect the lower classes in Britain or families with lower disposable incomes

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?

The magazine represents the luxury lifestyle in Britain: going to the top private schools, several holidays a year, only buying the biggest brand names. Although this is an inaccurate representation of Britain, it is the way the magazine has chosen to portray Britain. This tells us many of the magazine's readers lead luxurious lifestyles.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017?

the audience that may be offended or insulted by the front cover may be the lower classes as  due to lack of representation and also people of colour as Tatler frequently shows only white, female cover models. The upper class may be offended as the magazine shows them as partying and spending money whilst not doing anything important or useful.

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler. What issues or problems are regularly featured in Tatler?

Many issues featured regularly involve fashion (i.e. what to wear), dating, and the current lives of British aristocrats. The magazine rarely features "deep" issues, the stories are quite lighthearted.

industry and audience power essay💕

Essay question: “The internet has given audiences much more power than ever before.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?

In this essay I would like to exhibit how the internet has given audiences much more power than ever before. I strongly agree with this statement as people consume the media a lot more than they used to before. Audiences attentions are much more drawn in now compared to the past , social media is one thing that has put a big impact on the internet due to memes , music , movies & shows ect. People used to traditionally watch films and shows on the television but now we have many media platforms and devices to watch shows and movies to entertain us

The producers of the music Industry and the way they produce things now has changed drastically. Nowadays, anyone can participate in the music era simply by contributing with social media applications; mainly Youtube, digital downloads and streaming (Apple Music, Soundcloud etc..). These are great options and show how much the media has developed over the past few years. Technology has changed as-well and contributes to this as you can listen to music wherever by downloading it and accessing it easily. However this leads to music being illegally downloaded therefore artists fail to make as much income as they'd prefer. Advantages of this is consumers have much more variety and choice to discover new upcoming artists rather than being forced to listen to who the producers release. However a disadvantage could be that the audience could be more interested with the song than the music video , Traditional fans may have appreciated the music video.

The producers of the film and television industry has also changed massively.Technology nowadays now allow us to stream shows and we also have catch up services and readily available "on demand". The rise of technology ( mobiles , tablets , laptops ect.) have given consumers more opportunities to watch shows and films at anytime. Also big industries like Netflix have produced their own content called "Netflix Originals" This gives us much more variety rather than watching the traditional show. Whereas in previous eras people could only watch shows and films on a television and watch it there and then recording was not even an option. Advantages for this is it is accessible 24 hours a day ,long train and bus journeys could now become less boring and slightly more productive. You can catch up on whatever you've missed and even finish a series that you absolutely adore simply by binging it  'Binge watching' has replaced the traditional appointment to view format. Over the years, resolution, quantity and quality has now become more advanced as we have many different cameras and frames such as (4D, iMax, 3D) etc.. This will encourage more people to go out and watch the media rather then sitting at home and streaming it online. We also have many more choice and  Disadvantages could be costing of subscriptions ties with consumers in for periods of time. Also people who are not confident with technology have limitations. Some shows and films are not always available or take time to release exclusively to other platforms.

The final reason why i agree with this statement is because of the news industry. mainly due to the fact that you are able to access the news on your mobile devices for free. Audiences don't really like having to pay for content and so if they are able to get it for free they're most likely going to go for that option. One of those options are live streaming which is actual members of the audience are at say the scene of an active crime/explosion they then record things as it happens and upload it onto social media. By uploading it on social media the audiences are automatically being given information at the time and place where the incident is taking place quickly and in real time. The news may not be able to share as accurate information due to the fact that they weren't at the place and people that they ask may be exaggerating. One of the advantages of this is that audiences are able to access the news faster than ever before in just a few clicks. This is a huge advancement from before as now if we need to find out something important as it is happening we can do so instantly. Another advantage of this is that the internet just makes it so much more convenient and easy to access One of the disadvantages of this is that audiences don't really know who they can trust. This is due to the fact that many people may not be stating the facts and may in fact be exaggerating or straight out lying.Audiences can easily be swayed simply by the addition of a blue tick to one's name on Twitter but who is to approve of Twitter themselves. By not knowing who we can really trust, we don't know if we are truly getting authentic information.

Audience Effects Theory💕

1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
This is the view that audiences passively take in information from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone.

2) Write a definition of an active audience:
This is the more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
This is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds. This assumes no individual difference in audience members.

4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification:

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The News or The Weather as it gives us information and teaches us new things

IDENTITY: Keeping up with the Kardashians as it reminds me of my identity because im interested in makeup and fashion

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT:Tv shows the vampire diaries for example as its a show that entertains you and draws you in to always watch it

RELATIONSHIPS: Love Island because its all about love and relationships

5,Blue planet informs us about the ocean life and falls under the information/surveillance category in the Blumler and Katz uses of media.  It gives the audience a vicarious pleasure as we're experiencing life through the animals. Also, it allows you to escape from your everyday life by having an entertainment pleasure.

Reception Theory Blog💕

task 1;
1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?
The meaning the producers intend to communicate. This builds on the idea that producers can position the audience in a certain way and influence their reading so they accept the intended message by using recognised codes and conventions (such as stereotypes).

2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
The oppositional reading goes against the meaning the producers are trying to create. The audience reject the intended message and construct an opposite reading instead. This can be due to their own social, political or moral beliefs and values.

Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown:

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
The trailer positions the audience to respond to the young people as dangerous and vulnerable due to the fact that they are easily influenced.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
They might reject it because the producers might be stereo-typically referring to all young people who grow up in estates as someone
who are associated in gang culture.

task 2Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
The preferred reading of this advert is for the producers to make the consumers want to love McDonalds as much as they do and for the audience to want to buy their product. By them putting this burger as the cover picture it may make the consumers feel like they need to buy it because they advertise it as being "as good as it is big ... its all your kind of place".  McDonalds portrays their burger as being delicious. This may be targeted for the social class D . The oppositional reading is that some of the audience may go against this and think mcdonalds is over exaggerating how delicious their burger is. Also some of the audience may be vegetarian and may be offended by how McDonalds says "its all your kind of place" as vegetarians dont eat meat. Another oppositional reading that could occur is that some of the audience may not like Mcdonalds food in general and this advert may annoy them. This may be targeted at the social class B and A.
The negotiated reading may be that some audiences may want to try it and some dont so therefore the advert is accepted and rejected at the same time.

Task 3;6) Now find your own advertisement and write a 150+ word analysis using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

PREFERRED READING: The producers are trying to communicate that buying their product will make you look beautiful etc and could potentially mean you'll be powerful and fearless. OPPOSITINAL READING: Some maybe extremely disappointing and offended as the producers may try to communicate women need to be beautiful by being tall skinny and white. Other people from different backgrounds and ethnicity might think that this advert is horrible and extremely wrong. NEGOTIATED READINGS: Some people may not like that fact that it has a white model on the front cover, but the are not to be bothered but would prefer other races and ethnicity on the front cover.

October assessment learner response.💕

I got 18/25 thats is a grade 5.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Write down the mark you achieved for each question:

Q1:1
Q2:1
Q3:2

Where you didn't achieve full marks, write WHY you think you missed out on the extra marks. Use the indicative content suggestions in the mark scheme to help with this.

3) Did you get any media terminology wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision:
In question 4 i wrote Target Audience is a type of people the product is aimed at. Instead of writing project i should of written product.
4) Identify one of your stronger questions. Why did you do better on this question?
One of my stronger questions is question 6 i got three out of three and the reason for this is i know the conventions of a film poster well and went into detail.

5) Identify one of your weaker questions. Why did you score lower on this particular question?
One of my weaker questions was question 9 i got 3 out of 9 and this is because i needed to use more media analysis.

6) Re-draft your answer to Q9 and type it out in full. Use the mark scheme to identify anticipated content you can add to your response and make sure your typed re-draft is a top-level answer of at least three paragraphs.

Charities use pictures of children in their advertising to endorse their charity and as it puts a stronger impact and affect on the consumer because if they see a little child struggling with water and looking sad and depressed, the consumer may feel sympathetic and bad so then they would begin to support and donate to the charities ,in the water aid advert the background looks rough and the boy looks sad as hes not receiving his basic needs and this shows hes struggling and poor. Children are associated with innocence and vulnerability which is why is images would appeal to peoples generosity.

The producers and charities who are also behind the advert also may use a child to aim it to a target audience to children and teens. The image is quickly recognisable to the target audience because it
is associated with a particular place in the world and an issue like lack of water and not receiving the correct human rights.A stereotypical image of a child in need is used in the hope that the
target audience will recognise this stereotype and the image will
compel them to give money and donate to the cause. The target audience may also see it as a global issue and associated with particular places in the world.
